Do you have concerns about the UK Government’s plan to reduce support for energy bills starting March 31 of this year? You’re not alone. To help, we have compiled all of our energy crisis information on this page. Keep reading for everything you need to know about how to stay warm, reduce your energy bills, and the available support.
The UK Government has implemented the Energy Price Guarantee to limit the amount energy suppliers can charge for a single unit of gas and electricity until 2024. Without this guarantee, costs would have been even higher. Currently, typical households in England, Scotland, and Wales are paying around £2,500 annually for energy bills under this guarantee, but it will increase to around £3,000 starting April 1, 2023. Northern Ireland’s Energy Price Guarantee limits the price of gas and electricity until 2023.
Energy Support Scheme
The Energy Bills Support Scheme provides households in England, Scotland, and Wales (including those on prepayment meters) with £400 towards energy bill costs between October 2022 and March 2023. Meanwhile, households in Northern Ireland will receive £600 starting January of this year. After March 2023, support for most households will be reduced, but low-income households, disabled people, and pensioners will continue to receive cost-of-living payments until spring 2024.
The UK Government is offering financial support to those on means-tested benefits, people on disability benefits, and pensioners. We will update the page if more support becomes available. The ECO+ scheme for home insulation, launching in April 2023, is designed to make homes more energy-efficient by providing insulation to those with the lowest incomes and living in the least energy-efficient homes in lower council tax bands who have not received any other form of UK Government funding for improving their home’s energy efficiency.
The Help to Heat schemes provide funding to upgrade eligible homes. Homeowners in England and Wales can also receive simple energy efficiency advice from the UK Government.
